Alberta's Updated Building & Fire Codes 2009-05-07

The Government of Alberta has recently updated the Building and Fire Safety Codes which are now in effect for all builders.  The purpose of these new codes is to improve safety and reduce the effects of high-intensity residential fires.

Protection of Adjacent Buildings

To protect homes built close to property lines in proximity to each other, builders are now required to add a fire resistant material like gypsum board under flammable siding, such as vinyl.

Attached Garages

Builders are now required to finish the interior of an attached garage with fire resistant materials. The builder must finish the interior with drywall and the walls and ceiling are now required to have insulation and vapor barrier.
